Last December, the Missouri History Museum hosted its first Press Day event, an educational experience designed to provide a real-world setting for journalism students in area high schools. A press release alerted high school newsrooms to the upcoming event, which was attended by young reporters from around the St. Louis area. The students viewed the George Washington Carver exhibition (which ended March 1) and conducted interviews with Museum staff before returning to their schools to write about their observations.

Writing articles provided aspiring journalists with more than an opportunity to provide insight into their experience to fellow classmates: The students were also competing for publication in Voices. Of the many articles submitted for consideration, MHM staff was unanimous in its selection of Elise Moser’s newsletter project. An active musician and athlete, Moser plans on pursuing a career in journalism. Her enthusiasm for journalism shines through her writing, sparked by her first—and only—course in journalism at Pattonville High School. We are confident that when she joins the staff of Pattonville High School’s newspaper, the Pirate Press, she will continue to use her talents to serve her community. We wish her the best of success and are happy to recognize her talent by adding her voice to Voices.

One of the ideas that Elise Moser took away from the George Washington Carver exhibit is that he was an early advocate of environmentalism. She wrote an article about Carver’s eco-friendly study and tied it in to her high school’s involvement in the green movement.
